If you do enjoy the Story of D1 and D2 though you're in for a disappointment as it basically plays like a bad fan fiction and retcons most of the interesting things about how D1/2 even did their storytelling. It's about a million times better now than when I cleared Inferno difficulty at launch, so don't just assume D3 is the disaster you heard about when it first came out. No you don't need to play multiplayer at all, even if you hate the story in the games (which you won't, trust me) the games play incredibly well and hold up through repeat play throughs on higher difficulties.

Yes you should play these games (or just D2 if you don't wanna go back that far), D2 in particular has barely aged and is still incredibly diverse and fun to this day.
